Cincinnati Couple Write Bios of Cincinnati Presidents
William Henry Harrison and William Howard Taft
Cincinnati OH-September 21, 2004
Sue Ann and Mark Painter have written biographies of two Cincinnati Presidents: William Henry Harrison: Father of the West, by Sue Ann Painter, and William Howard Taft: President and Chief Justice, by Judge Mark Painter. The authors will autograph books at publication party at the Ohio Book Store, 726 Main Street, on Tuesday, September 28, 4:00 p.m. The public is invited.
The books, which are targeted to readers age 12 and older, are the first in the Ohio Presidents Series, published by Jarndyce & Jarndyce Press, an imprint of Cincinnati Book Publishing. They were printed by The John Swift Company, Cincinnati.
The paperback books, which retail for $14.95, are available from local booksellers, including Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Rookwood Commons, Lexington, and Cleveland; the Ohio Book Store on Main Street, Cincinnati; Museum Center Shop at Cincinnati Union Terminal; William Howard Taft Birthplace; and Delhi Historical Society. For order-by-mail information and library binding books ($23.95 ea.), visit www.cincybooks.com.
"Both of these men have been underappreciated," said Judge Painter. "Their terms as president were not the most distinguished (Harrison had a good excuse-he died after a month in office). But they had important and interesting pre-presidential careers."
Harrison was commandant of Fort Washington, Major General of the Army of the Northwest in the War of 1812, first governor of the Indiana Territory, and U. S. Congressman and Senator from Cincinnati before being elected the ninth president and first from the West.
Taft had many talents-he was the first Dean of the UC law school, built the Panama Canal, was a courageous trust-busting president, and reformed the federal judiciary. He was the only American to be both president and chief justice.
Sue Ann Painter is a principal in PSA Consulting Inc, which specializes in publications and administrative services for non-profit and government entities. She is co-author of The History of Delhi Township, which was re-printed in 2003 and co-author of an architectural history of Cincinnati, to be published by the Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati and Ohio University Press. She has curated exhibits and written extensively on local art and political history topics.
Mark Painter has served as a judge on the Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals in Cincinnati since 1995, after 13 years on the Hamilton County Municipal Court. He is the author of Ohio Driving Under the Influence Law, and co-author of Ohio Appellate Practice, both legal texts, and of The Legal Writer: 40 Rules for the Art of Legal Writing. Judge Painter writes a monthly column on writing in Ohio Lawyers Weekly, which is then reprinted by Lawyers Weekly USA and the bar associations in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cuyahoga County.
Upcoming Programs: The authors will talk about "Presidential Campaigns, Past and Present," and autograph books at the Delhi Historical Society's public meeting on Monday, October 11, 7:30 p.m., DelhiTownship Park Lodge, 5125 Foley Road.
The Painters are featured in a public program at the Harrison-Symmes Memorial Museum, Miami Township Hall, 112 S. Miami Ave., Cleves, on Sunday, October 24 at 1 p.m. No charge for either event.
